Giants manager Tony Vitello details differences between coaching college, MLB
New San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello explains the differences between coaching college baseball and MLB.
The Giants finalized a deal to make Tony Vitello their next manager on Wednesday afternoon. The 47-year-old Vitello, who had been the head coach at the University of Tennessee since the 2018 season, becomes the first college coach to move directly to MLB manager without previous professional coaching experience.
One clear candidate has emerged to become the Atlanta Braves’ new manager. The Braves appear to be targeting Los Angeles Dodgers bench coach Danny Lehmann as their new manager, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.
Tennessee coach Tony Vitello, who has spent his entire career in college, led the Volunteers to a College World Series title last year.
Shelton, 55, was a Twins coach under their last two managers, Paul Molitor in 2018 and Baldelli in 2019, before getting the Pirates manager job. The Bucs had a 306-440 record under Shelton from 2020-25. After five losing seasons in a row, he was fired this past season after Pittsburgh got off to a 12-26 record.
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins have picked former bench coach Derek Shelton as their new manager, a person with knowledge of the decision confirmed.
