When economic times get tough, lawmakers sometimes come to the rescue in the form of stimulus checks. And now, President Trump is proposing a $2,000 tariff rebate check to help Americans cope with the higher costs that have resulted since tariff policies took hold.

Under Hawley’s bill, each adult would receive “at least $600,” as would each dependent child. The total rebate for a DINK household (dual income, no kids), for example, would be at least $1,200, while a family of four could receive $2,400.

Economists who spoke with Newsweek warned that tariff revenues may be insufficient to finance Trump's $2,000 checks.

On Saturday, Trump wrote on social media that his tariff plan will benefit working-class people and those who oppose the tariffs are "FOOLS!"

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said the funds raised from tariffs will be used to send a $2,000 “dividend” to Americans, “not including high income people.”
