The surprise came on Saturday, when four-time U.S. champion Ilia Malinin gave an uncharacteristically uneven performance in the men’s short program and finished in second behind Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama. The “ Quad God ” will get a chance of redemption in the men’s free skate, the final event of the team portion.

Ilia Malinin secured gold for Team USA in the final segment of the team figure skating event. But it wasn't the dominant performance fans have become used to seeing from the two-time world champion. Malinin said the Olympic stage took him by surprise.

Malinin's score was 200.03. When Sato's was revealed as 194.86, it clinched the gold for the U.S. in this event for a second consecutive Winter Olympics and sent a bench full of U.S. athletes, including Madison Chock, Evan Bates, Amber Glenn, Alysa Lu, Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea, hugging one another as they clinched the title.

The backflip, which was long banned in competition because of its inherent danger, is allowed now, though it also doesn’t carry a whole lot of scoring weight.
