It's been more than a decade since the last big ancient Egypt show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now comes “Divine Egypt.”

The Grand Egyptian Museum, which held its opening ceremony on Saturday, will showcase tomb paintings and other artefacts offering insight into ancient Egyptian life, said Salima Ikram, Distinguished Professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo.

The new space, which has been two decades in the making and spans 500,000 square metres, includes immersive exhibits and virtual-reality devices, in contrast to cluttered displays in the more than century-old Egyptian Museum.

Two decades in the making, the museum located near the Giza Pyramids and Sphinx showcases over 50,000 artifacts detailing life in ancient Egypt.
